The Fantastic Beasts franchise has found Johnny Depp’s replacement in the role of Gellert Grindelwald. Warner Bros. officially announced on Wednesday.
Mads Mikkelsen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Hannibal, Casino Royale) takes the role of Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts film. Earlier this month, unfortunately, Depp just out of the line when he lost his legal battle against The Sun. It happens after the newspaper referred to him as a “wife-beater” in an article. Depp vehemently denies the allegations.
Mads Mikkelsen for Johnny Depp’s replacement on Fantastic Beasts
Mikkelsen is best known for his role as Dr Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal and for film roles in Casino Royale and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Mikkelsen is apparently director David Yates’ top choice, and Warner Bros. will keep the film’s new release date of July 15, 2020.
Mikkelsen (Rogue One, Hannibal, Doctor Strange) joins a cast that includes Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, William Nadylam, Poppy Corby-Tuech, Jessica Williams, Victoria Yeates, and Jude Law.
The latest installment in the series is currently in production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden outside of London. The journey continues as Warner Bros. Pictures’ third Fantastic Beasts film takes audiences back to the beloved Wizarding World for an all-new, globe-trotting adventure.
Although Depp only filmed one scene for the film so far, he will still retain his multi-million dollar salary due to the type of contract. Which is guaranteed his pay even if his role was recast by now.
