Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gave the MCU its first taste of the Fantastic Four by casting John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic for the Illuminati on Earth-838. Bringing new versions of the team’s iconic costumes into play for his MCU debut, Krasinski embodies the essence of Marvel’s First Family in a way that brought fans to the edge of their seats on his debut.
This costume is one of the many challenges that the Doctor Strange 2 team has to face when it comes to costumes, especially with so many unique characters pushing the story forward. Doctor Strange finds himself in a new Master outfit, and with the half a dozen unique heroes that make up the Illuminati, it’s imperative to make sure they appear on screen the right way.
The Reed Richard Suit is Completely CGI
Several of these suits were made completely digital, including Anson Mount’s Black Bolt outfit, leaving fans wondering how much CGI was used in unexpected places for Doctor Strange 2.
Now, more details have been revealed about John Krasinski’s Fantastic Four costume, explaining just how much work was put into bringing Mr. MCU’s first fantastic into the story.
In an interview on the Phase Zero podcast, MCU costume designer Graham Churchyard shared insight into how John Krasinski’s suit was made for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Churchyard explains how Hayley Atwell and Lahsana Lynch’s costumes were made for them after several adjustments to get them just right. However, he confirmed that Mr. Fantastic Krasinski was developed entirely via CGI and no physical costumes were made for the character, as was the case with Anson Mount’s Black Bolt.
In the Illuminati’s first introduction to the MCU, it appears that most of the team actually donned the original costumes outside of John Krasinski and Anson Mount, whose powers also require more CGI than any other character to bring to life. While this doesn’t indicate at all whether this trend will continue for the Fantastic Four in their own solo films, fans are just hopeful that the team outfits will look as good as expected when the time comes.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now streaming on Disney+, and the Blu-ray disc will be available for purchase on July 26.
