Much can be said about Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff. In his first MCU appearance, he aligns himself with the evil Ultron and acts against the Avengers only to change his mind and switch sides. After that, she joins a superhero team and ends up falling in love with the android Vision. The pair continued their romance until Thanos rolled over and killed Vision in pursuit of the Infinity Stones. Then came WandaVision.
In Marvel Studios’ first foray into television, WandaVision, Wanda lives a beautiful suburban life with Vision and their two sons, but this is all just a facade. Maximoff is torn from his fantasies while realizing his full potential as an extremely powerful magic user known as the Red Witch. He then causes all sorts of trouble for a Dr. Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Throughout Wanda’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she’s had a number of different costumes, from outfits that look a lot like superheroes to something that might suit her style better, as seen in WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness.
Wanda Maximoff Costume Change
Speaking to Marvel’s official YouTube channel, Andy Park, Marvel Studios Visual Development Supervisor, spoke about the changes made to the Scarlet Witch costume between WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:
Park also commented on the evolution of character designs across all of his MCU appearances, with the artist mentioning that he hopes fans “can pick up the look and just see how far he goes.”
As Andy Park references, Wanda’s suit was modified between her two most recent on-screen appearances. Full length sleeves are added to show that this is not exactly the same Wanda and that she has been corrupted by Darkhold.
Also worth noting is that some sort of cracking texture was added to Wanda’s bodice in Doctor Strange 2, with the cracks emanating from her heart. This is to symbolize that his heart is broken, losing Vision and his children.
The execution here is nuanced, but the point is very clear because costumes can tell a story as well as dialogue or scenery. And when all the elements of a film’s production work in tandem with one another, each part ultimately enhances the next.
At this time, it is unknown where Wanda Maximoiff will appear next or whether she survived the events of the Multiverse of Madness. But with an individual as strong as him, it’s probably safe to say that he won’t be out of the picture for very long.
