HBO has given an order for a prequel to the famous TV show Game of Thrones, titled House of the Dragon. The prequel series will be set about 300 years before events in the original series. The report came hours after another prequel, starring Naomi Watts, was canceled.

Game of Thrones was the most popular series from HBO. It won multiple awards and drew millions of viewers.

“It’s my pleasure to announce today that we are ordering House of the Dragon straight to series for HBO,” said HBO President Casey Bloys. “It tells the story of House Targaryen and the early days of Westeros,” he continued.

What We Knew from Game of Thrones Prequel So Far

House of the Dragon would be co-produced by Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, as posted by Game of Thrones official Twitter account.

This Game of Thrones prequel is based on Fire and Blood, by George RR Martin. The story will focus on the Targaryen dynasty. House of the Dragon will air on HBO and HBO Max.

Condal and Sapochnik will serve as co-showrunners, while Sapochnik will direct the pilot episode. Martin and Vince Gerardis will serve as executive producers.

“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories,” Casey Bloys said in a statement. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan, and George.”
